Hillenburg who worked with Kenny on the aforementioned show wanted him to use that voice for SpongeBob SquarePants. The voice of SpongeBob is by Tom Kenny who originally used that voice for a female alligator in the show entitled Rocko's Modern Life. He has big blue eyes, a pointy nose, two front buck teeth that are very prominent, and a lot of holes over his body- somehow making him look like cheese. He is a sea sponge that looks like a kitchen sponge. SpongeBob made his first appearance on in the pilot episode entitled "Help Wanted". He thought that a squeaky clean kitchen sponge is appropriate for the concept. He was made by cartoonist and marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg who wanted an overly optimistic character that is perceived to be annoying by other characters.
